  1. The U.S. Department of Education ANEP (Alaska Native Educational Equity Program) workshops during AFN – Wednesday 10/19, 12:00-4:00pm, Room 202 Butrovich Building, UAF

All Current Grantees: October 19th from Noon to 4:00 at Room 202 of the Butrovich Building, UAF to learn about grant implementation, management, etc.

  1. The 2016 Annual AFN/NCAI Tribal Conference –  Wednesday 10/19, 9am – 5pm, 1700 Van Horn Road Fairbanks, AK (Corner of Van Horn and Lathrop)

The Alaska Federation of Natives and the National Congress of American Indians are pleased to announce that the 5th Annual Tribal Conference: Strengthening Alaska Through Tribal Self-Determination will be held on October 19, 2016 in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Tribal leaders, tribal administrators, tribal court judges and administrators, and tribal members from Alaska’s 231 tribes are invited to participate and share their experiences on federal, state and local issues of importance. This immediately precedes the AFN Convention, October 20-22.

  1. Wellness Room – Thursday 10/20, 9:00-3:30pm, Room 2

The Statewide Suicide Prevention Council in partnership with Southcentral Foundation and Tanana Chiefs Conference will be hosting a Wellness Room at the Carlson Center during the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention Thursday, Oct. 20 through Saturday, Oct. 22.

There will be clinicians and volunteers on hand throughout the convention in the Wellness Room to support people that might experience emotional hardships and need someone to talk with. The clinicians and volunteers will assist people in finding solutions, but if someone is considering harming themselves they will be put in contact with emergency services for medical care. If someone is not comfortable with talking to someone in person they are encouraged to contact the Careline Crisis Line toll free at 1-877-266-4357.

All Veterans welcome to socialize and relax with refreshments

The Alaska Native Language Preservation & Advisory Council (ANLPAC)Invites you to share time with them at the Language Survival: Listening Session

  1. Field Hearing Ivory Ban – Thursday 10/20. 2:00-3:30pm, Northern Lights Room

Senator Sullivan will convene the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Fisheries, Water, and Wildlife for a field hearing. The hearing is entitled “Examining the Impacts of the Federal African Elephant Ivory Ban and Broader State Ivory Bans on the Market for Authentic Alaska Native Handicrafts.” At the hearing the committee will take testimony on how state laws that ban walrus, mammoth, and narwhal ivory in addition to elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn can severely impact Alaskan Native carvers and the market for their products.

  1. Every Student Succeeds Act Workshop – Thursday 10/20, 3:30-4:30pm, Room 3

The new Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) purports to return to states many decisions previously prescribed through No Child Left Behind. In this session, the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development will provide an overview of the major components of ESSA and the timeline for submitting Alaska’s state plan for ESSA.The Department will engage the Alaskan Native community and leaders at AFN in discussion regarding the key decisions that must be made as part of Alaska’s state plan.

  1. BLM Listening Session – Friday 10/21, 9:00-11:30 am, Room 3

BLM Alaska is currently beginning the work on revisions of two Resource Management Plans and completing a third. The plans cover BLM managed land in Central Yukon, Bering Sea Western Interior and Eastern Interior areas of Alaska.The decisions in these plans affect communities, subsistence and uses in the planning areas. Hearing from and meeting tribal community members and delegates is a vital step to identifying important issues that must be considered. The Listening Session is a chance for AFN delegates and participants to review maps of the planning areas, discuss current reports and talk with BLM planners about the issues that affect your community.

  1. International Repatriation Consultation – Friday 10/21, 9:00-12:30pm, Media Room

US interagency group led by the Department of the Interior consultation on the topic of International Repatriation. “International repatriation” meaning the return of ancestors and cultural items from foreign holdings, such as in museums and auction house sales.

  1. Opioid Listening Session – Friday 10/21, 3:30-5:00pm, Room 3

In early August, more than 400 Alaskans came together for the Alaska Wellness Summit: Conquering the Opioid Crisis hosted by U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan. Goals for the summit included educating, listening and engaging with each other; painting a picture of Alaska and the unique challenges we face for the federal officials who attended; reducing the stigma of addiction by showing people who are struggling that they are not alone; and giving everyone a sense of hope that working together as one community, we can conquer this crisis.

This listening session will be a chance to follow up on the summit to hear directly from rural Alaskans and Alaska Natives about the devastating toll addiction is taking on some of our smallest and most remote communities.
